Create a Christmas decathlon!

How quickly can you get your wetsuit on?
Yay! It's December and we're officially allowed to be excited about Christmas! But as a parent, there's a lot to be done - from choosing and wrapping presents and writing and sending cards to being all ready for the school plays, carol services and parties.

This might mean you're skipping workouts at the same time as hitting the mince pies.

But rather than let everything take a seasonal slide, why not seek inspiration from the recent 'Decathlon Decathlon' event at Surrey Quays, and set yourself up a few little physical challenges at home? Best of all you can get the kids to join in (and tire them out...) when the school holidays hit.

One of the perks of being in the Julia Buckley #Fitnessrockstars Collective, is that I get to work with some great brands like Decathlon. In fact lots of the gym equipment Julia uses in her workouts can be bought at the sports store, so it's a natural fit if you've decided you prefer - or need - to work out at home on your own timescale (essential for busy parents, because, well, kids!).

So how about some ideas then?

Frolicking festive fun

Add some wiggle to your workout
Many people think working out is boring - but several of the Decathlon decathlon events were downright silly (but will still get you out of breath). Best of all they can be replicated at home - probably with items you already have in your sports equipment stash.

First up - the one that has us all hot and sweaty in the summertime; the 'tent pitch and fold up'. Yes that's right - using those pop-up tents that we all have to protect out little ones from too much sun at the beach. Everyone knows how hard it is to get those back in the case! Try using a timer to add to the pressure!

Another great one for bringing back the summer memories is the snorkelling challenge - getting your wetsuit, snorkel mask/goggles and flippers on in a race format. Make sure that wetsuit is zipped up! Then there's the hiking boot lace up - starting from scratch with the laces out of the boot entirely - educational and frustrating all at once! Or why not see who can put on the most running gear (including high-vis jackets, gloves, hats, head torches etc) - and do a lap of the garden.

Serious sporting skills

Who will lift that trophy?
If you want to get that tad more serious, then prepare to go head-to-head using a darts board recording everyone's scores - or use basketball and shoot hoops for a minute. Another one  you might find the kids beat you on hands down is a hula hoop contest. Hula fitness is a fab way to work out at home. If you've got the gift you can wiggle you way through a workout. And don't think that circles are all you can do - check this page for ten hula hoop exercises you can master. You could even set up a golf putting test. This might be one to challenge Grandad to when he's had a few sherries after the Queen's Speech on the big day!

And if you want to feel the burn, then it's time to level up and bring in some serious cardio with the punch bag power-up challenge - punching as fast and hard as you can for one minute. Or even use a Turbo Trainer to set a cycling contest.

Turns out there's a Coleen Competitive in us all...even at Christmas (sorry Santa!).
